Crime Stoppers has worked with law enforcement to solve over 7,500 crimes, recover $7.6 million in stolen property, and remove $59.5 million worth of drugs off the streets of New Brunswick, all thanks to information from the public.

The Moncton region continues to have the lowest crime severity index of census metropolitan areas (CMAs) in Atlantic Canada, according to a Statistics Canada report. The report, titled Police reported crime statistics in Canada, 2010, released today, shows that the volume and severity of crime in the Moncton area is 13% below the national average.

The provincial government and N.B. Crime Stoppers have joined forces to make schools and communities safer with a new Student Crime Stoppers program.

"Our government is committed to creating safe and healthy working and learning environments," said Premier David Alward. "Programs like this make an important contribution by enlisting the community's help in working toward this goal."

The program offers students a confidential and anonymous tip-line so they can report crimes without fear of reprisal, retaliation or peer pressure. The program is already operating in Nova Scotia, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia.

FREDERICTON (CNB) – Le gouvernement provincial et Échec au crime Nouveau-Brunswick ont uni leurs efforts pour faire des écoles et des collectivités des endroits plus sûrs grâce à un nouveau programme d'Échec au crime pour les élèves.

« Notre gouvernement s'est engagé à créer des milieux de travail et d'apprentissage sains et sécuritaires », a affirmé le premier ministre, David Alward. « Des programmes comme celui-ci permettent à la collectivité d'apporter une contribution importante à la réalisation de cet objectif. »

Le programme prévoit l'accès à une ligne téléphonique confidentielle et anonyme grâce à laquelle les élèves peuvent signaler des crimes sans avoir peur de représailles ou de pression par les pairs. For 26 years, N.B. Crime Stoppers has given New Brunswickers an opportunity to provide information about crimes both anonymously and securely through their toll-free hotline at 1-800-222-8477, but as cell phones and the internet become the communication tools of choice these days, the charitable organization felt it was time to expand the ways it collects these tips – many of which assist law enforcement in the province solve crucial, time-dependent cases.

The volunteer-run group is launching their ‘Talk, Type, Text Anonymously’ campaign, which incorporates a guaranteed system to protect the identity of the tipster – which is of the utmost importance to the Crime Stoppers program. Civilian operators at the Fredericton-based office receive tips, which are then forwarded to law enforcement agencies for review, including those at Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO).

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Crime Stoppers in New Brunswick. Since 1985, the program has helped solve over 7300 cases, assisted with the recovery of more than $7.4 million dollars worth in stolen property, and removed over $52 million dollars worth of illegal drugs from New Brunswick streets. The program has also helped to solve 11 murders in New Brunswick.

N.B. Crime Stoppers' commitment to community was extended in 2009 to include the promotion of blood donation by joining Canadian Blood Services' Partners for Life program. Since joining, N.B. Crime Stoppers members have donated a total of 415 units. This action-oriented group has a goal of 100 units of blood for 2012 of which they have already donated 23 units in the first half of January.
