"The national crime rate has been falling steadily for the past 20 years and is now at its lowest level since 1973." - Statistics Canada

MONCTON (RCMP/GRC) - The Moncton region continues to have the lowest crime severity index of census metropolitan areas (CMAs) in Atlantic Canada, according to a Statistics Canada report. The report, titled Police reported crime statistics in Canada, 2010, released today, shows that the volume and severity of crime in the Moncton area is 13% below the national average.

The crime severity index in Greater Moncton dropped 5% from the previous year, with the violent crime severity index dropping 10%. Several key areas also saw declines over last year. Break and enters fell 10%, motor vehicle thefts dropped 27% and robbery declined 30%.

"This report backs up the fact that we have a very safe community in a very safe province," says Inspector Marlene Snowman, the officer-in-charge of the Codiac Regional RCMP. "The reduction is a testament to the steps not only the police have taken to reduce crime, but what partners and citizens have done to reduce crime."

The report shows that the crime severity throughout New Brunswick declined 3% in 2010, ranking New Brunswick third among the provinces and territories with the lowest crime severity rate.
