Communiqué: Lancement d'un nouveau programme d'Échec au crime pour les élèves (24 mars 2011)

FREDERICTON (CNB) – The provincial government and N.B. Crime Stoppers, Inc. have joined forces to make schools and communities safer with a new Student Crime Stoppers program.

"Our government is committed to creating safe and healthy working and learning environments," said Premier David Alward. "Programs like this make an important contribution by enlisting the community's help in working toward this goal."

The program offers students a confidential and anonymous tip-line so they can report crimes without fear of reprisal, retaliation or peer pressure. The program is already operating in Nova Scotia, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia.

"This initiative is another positive step towards creating a healthy and safe learning environment for our students and staff," said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Jody Carr. "It also complements the work being done to reduce bullying in our schools by the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Positive Learning and Working Environments. We are moving towards a culture of caring and kindness.”

"Our post-secondary students are active members of their communities," said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Martine Coulombe. "I believe this new program will provide an additional tool for them to become even more engaged in the communities where they learn and where they live.”

Ron Godin, president of N.B. Crime Stoppers, said the program can also encourage students interested in a career in law enforcement.

"Students in other provinces have formed Student Crime Stoppers Clubs within their schools,” said Godin. “They have undertaken such initiatives as having guest speakers; organizing crime prevention events; and making students more safety conscious regarding their laptops, iPods, cell phones, lockers, and personal belongings. Some have actually gone out to check the cars in parking lots and then leave notes for the owners of cars that were not locked."

The program is modelled on the regular Crime Stoppers program, with the same contact information, cash award structure, tipster operators, local Crime Stoppers chapter involvement and payment procedures to tipsters, if they qualify.

Godin said the key to the program is the anonymity of the person calling-in the tip.

Students with information about a crime can contact Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (1-800-222-8477); by texting TIP212 plus their information to CRIMES (274637); or online.

Students providing tips will never be asked their name and do not have to make a formal statement or appear in court.
